IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English language proficiency test designed for non-native English speakers who wish to study or work in English-speaking countries. The test assesses four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Test Format

The IELTS test is around 2 hours and 45 minutes long and consists of four parts:
Listening — 30 minutes
Reading — 60 minutes
Writing — 60 minutes

Speaking — 11-14 minutes

The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are completed on the same day, while the Speaking section may be completed on the same day or up to 7 days before or after the other sections.

IELTS Band Scores

The IELTS test uses an overall 9-band scale to test the proficiency of a student with each band corresponding to a level of ability in the language. The overall score is an average of the scores for the four sections.

How to Apply for the IELTS Test?

Register Online

  • Most test centers allow you to register for the IELTS exam online through their websites. Create an account and complete the online registration form.

Choose a Test Date

  • Select a test date that is convenient for you and available at the chosen test center. IELTS exams are usually held multiple times a month.

Choose Your Test Modules (if applicable)

  • If you are taking the IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) purposes, you may need to choose additional modules, such as IELTS Life Skills..

Pay the Exam Fee

  • Pay the registration fee using the available payment methods, which may include credit/debit cards or other electronic payment options. The fee can vary by test center and location.

Receive Confirmation

  • After completing your online registration and payment, you will receive a confirmation email with the details of your test date, time, and location. Keep this email for reference.

Prepare for the Exam

  • Begin your preparation for the IELTS exam by using study materials, taking practice tests, and improving your English language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Attend the Test

  • On the test day, arrive at the test center at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start time. Bring a valid passport or national identity card with you, as this will be the primary form of identification accepted.

Receive Your Scores

  • IELTS scores are typically available online 13 calendar days after the test. You will receive an email notification when your scores are ready. You can log in to your account on the test center's website to access your results.

Receive a Test Report Form (TRF)

  • A physical copy of your Test Report Form, which includes your scores and personal details, will be mailed to you. You can also request additional TRFs to be sent to institutions of your choice.
