IELTS Academic: How to Ace Your IELTS Examination?

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is widely recognised as a reliable means of assessing the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of communication.

It is the world’s most popular English language test. The test covers all the necessary English skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. IELTS is owned by three partners: Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge, the British Council, and IDP Education Pty Limited (through its subsidiary company, IELTS Australia Pty Limited). If you prepare well for the IELTS exam, then you can surely score a high band and get into the best universities across the world.

How to Ace Your IELTS Examination

1. Learn the Test Format

The first and foremost thing that you must know is the IELTS test format. You must know what all sections are in the test and how much time is allotted to complete each section. This would help you to estimate the time you would require for each section and the ways to give your best answer to get a good score.

2. Time Management

It is very essential to properly manage your time during the exam, as you only get 60 minutes to answer 40 questions. Managing your time will let you solve many of the questions that would ultimately help you get the desired result. To learn time management, first, you must practice a lot. Put an alarm clock in front of you with a set time every time you sit to practice for each section. Keep your approach straight; if you are not able to answer one question, then move on to the next without wasting any time.

Listening and Reading

  • Read textbooks, newspapers, and magazines such as India Today, Time, etc.
  • Read all the questions carefully first, then underline the keywords, and then answer the questions.
  • While listening, make notes of all the answers.
  • Read, write, and listen at the same time.

Writing

  • Increase your vocabulary and grammar to use in your writing. To increase vocabulary, use memory cards, watch Hollywood movies and shows, skim to identify passages, and draw inferences.
  • Prepare a list of familiar topics and write about them. Plan your answer before you write by making key points.
  • Stick to the topic and follow the rule of one paragraph, one topic. Do not talk about multiple ideas in one single paragraph.
  • Make sure that you have enough time to check your spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Speaking

  • Join a club whose members speak English, try to speak in English with everyone, prepare salient points to start with, and practice giving responses for a minute to gradually increase the time.
  • Be relaxed and carefully listen to the examiner’s questions & instructions.
  • Give complete answers to all the questions.
  • Use preparation time to plan your talk.
