Germany APS Update 2026: 70% in Class 12 Mandatory for UG

Germany has always been a popular destination due to its low tuition fees and globally ranked universities. However, with increasing applications from international students, especially from India, the APS system has introduced stricter academic requirements to ensure quality and preparedness. If you’re planning to study in Germany after Class 12, this is an important update you need to know.

Germany APS Update: What’s the New Rule?

The German Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) has updated its requirements. From Winter 2026 onwards, students must have a minimum of 70% in Class XII to be eligible for bachelor’s pathways in Germany.

This rule applies to:

  • All education boards (CBSE, ICSE, and State Boards)
  • All students planning to pursue bachelor’s degrees in Germany

This means that scoring below 70% in Class 12 can directly impact your chances of studying in Germany at the undergraduate level.

Your Two “YES” Pathways

Even with this update, there are still two clear pathways for students to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Germany:

Path 1: Class XII + APS → Studienkolleg

Students who meet the 70% requirement can apply for a Studienkolleg (foundation year). After completing it, they can enter a German university for their bachelor’s degree.

Path 2: Class XII + APS + 1 Year Bachelor’s in India

Alternatively, students can complete one year of a bachelor’s degree in India and then apply directly to universities in Germany.

Important: In both pathways, a minimum of 70% in Class XII is mandatory. There are no exceptions.

Who is Not Affected?

Before you worry, here’s some good news:

  • If you have already applied under the previous rules → Old rules still apply
  • If you already have admission → No changes for you
  • If you are planning for a master’s degree → This rule does not affect you

What Should Students Do Now?

If you are currently in Class 11 or 12, this update is crucial for your planning.

Here’s what you should focus on:

  • Aim for 70% or above in Class XII
  • Start early preparation for APS documentation
  • Research Studienkolleg and university options in advance
  • Keep a backup plan ready in case of score variations

Final Thoughts

Germany remains one of the best destinations for affordable, high-quality education. While the new APS rule may seem strict, it also ensures that students are academically prepared for the rigorous German education system.

If you are serious about studying in Germany in 2026, the key is simple—focus on your Class XII performance and plan your pathway early. With the right preparation, you can still achieve your dream of studying in Germany.
