GRE Updated Format: What Students Should Know

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a key standardized test for students seeking admission to graduate programs worldwide. It assesses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills. Recently, from late 2023 through 2025, the GRE format has been updated to be more streamlined and user-friendly while maintaining its rigor. For students aiming to pursue advanced studies in the USA or elsewhere, understanding these changes is crucial for effective preparation and improved performance on test day.

What Has Changed in the GRE Format?

The most prominent update is the reduction in the total test time to just under 2 hours, precisely 1 hour 58 minutes, down from the prior duration of nearly 4 hours. This substantial cut aims to minimize test-taker fatigue and streamline the exam process without compromising its rigorous assessment standards. Breakdown of the Updated GRE Structure

The GRE General Test now contains only three sections, with a total of 55 questions:

1. Analytical Writing (30 minutes):

  • Only one essay task remains, “Analyze an Issue,” replacing the former two-task format (the “Analyze an Argument” task has been removed).
  • You have 30 minutes to craft a well-reasoned response.

2. Verbal Reasoning (2 sections, 41 minutes total):

  • Section 1: 12 questions, 21 minutes.
  • Section 2: 15 questions, 23 minutes.
  • Total: 27 questions.
  • This section continues to assess reading comprehension, text completion, and critical reasoning skills.

3. Quantitative Reasoning (2 sections, 47 minutes total):

  • Section 1: 12 questions, 18 minutes.
  • Section 2: 15 questions, 26 minutes.
  • Total: 27 questions.
  • Quantitative topics remain focused on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

Key Features of the New Format

  • No more experimental (unscored) or research sections. Every question counts toward your score, simplifying the experience and test logistics.
  • The total score remains in the range of 260–340 for the combined Verbal and Quantitative sections, with the Analytical Writing section scored separately on a scale of 0–6.
  • The GRE remains a computer-adaptive test, meaning the difficulty of the second section in both Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning will depend on your performance in the first section.
  • You may still skip questions and return or change your answers within a section as before.

Why Was the GRE Shortened?

ETS, the official test administrator, states that the updated format improves the exam experience. The goals are to reduce stress and testing fatigue, deliver scores more quickly (within 8–10 days now), and make the assessment more accessible and practical for a wider range of candidates.

Other Important Points

  • The GRE General Test is typically computer-based worldwide, and in countries like India, only the computer-based option is available.
  • There is no negative marking, so you won’t lose points for incorrect answers.
  • Subject GREs have also seen changes, such as reduced durations and the discontinuation of the Chemistry test after April 2023.

How Should Students Prepare?

The core skills assessed—analytical writing, critical reading, and quantitative reasoning—have not changed. However, each question now carries slightly more weight, so precision and timing are even more critical. Time management and focused practice, especially for the single analytical writing task, are essential in light of the updated structure

Conclusion

The GRE’s updated format reflects a shift toward greater efficiency and a more candidate-friendly testing experience. These changes reduce test time and stress while maintaining the exam’s core purpose of assessing key skills. By understanding the new structure and adjusting your preparation, you can approach the test with confidence, reduce anxiety, and improve your chances of achieving a strong score for graduate admission success.
