How to Get Into ETH Zurich

Bachelor’s Programs:

  • International students must hold a recognized upper secondary school-leaving certificate.
  • Strong academic performance in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and languages is essential.
  • For many international qualifications, admission is possible without an entrance exam if certain criteria are met (e.g., International Baccalaureate with at least 38 out of 42 points and specific subjects at Higher and Standard Level).
  • If your diploma does not meet the direct admission criteria, you may be required to take the ETH Zurich entrance examination, which tests proficiency in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology.

Master’s Programs:

  • Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., engineering, natural sciences, mathematics) from a recognized university, typically with at least 180 ECTS credits.
  • Additional requirements may apply for certain programs, such as a minimum grade (e.g., 5.0/6.0 for Swiss University of Applied Sciences graduates).
  • Some programs may require proof of English or German proficiency, GRE scores, a CV, a motivation letter, and letters of recommendation.
  • For design-oriented programs, a portfolio may be necessary.

Application Process

  • Online Application: All candidates must apply online through the ETH Zurich admissions portal. Make sure to upload all required documents, including transcripts, diplomas, language certificates, CV, and motivation letter, by the deadline.
  • Entrance Examination: If required, register for the ETH entrance exam by March 31. The exam is typically held the following year, and successful candidates can enroll in the autumn semester.
  • Application Fee: It costs CHF 50 for Swiss university diploma holders and CHF 150 for all other applicants. Please note that this fee cannot be refunded.
  • Admission Decision: After reviewing your application and, if applicable, entrance exam results, ETH Zurich will notify you of its decision.
